8 VPN for Netflix Unblock Working In 2021 – Regularly Updated

April 7, 2021by Claudio R.4

If you are looking for streaming Netflix US catalog from anywhere, you need to unblock Netflix with a VPN. However, since this popular streaming platform keeps banning VPN servers, it’s important to stay updated on which Virtual Private Network are currently working.

You may wonder;

  • How does Netflix detect VPN?
  • Why does Netflix block VPN?
  • How to get around Netflix VPN block?
  • Is there a way for streaming Netflix with VPN despite the block?
  • Can I use a free VPN to watch Netflix?

In this article, we cover all these topics and explain how to get full access to Netflix via VPN from all around the globe.

Which VPN Works with Netflix?

Did you know that your Netflix subscription is valid worldwide? This means that you can watch the US catalog, the richest one, from wherever around the world. You just need to bypass the block imposed by the geo-localization.

Again, if you’re interested in watching local content from specific countries, are there any VPNs that unblock Netflix UK, Germany, France, and Denmark etc.?

Not all VPNs unblock Netflix. Many of them are banned by the streaming platform. Therefore, you need a Netflix VPN that is strong enough to bypass the restrictions. Moreover, if a VPN work with Netflix US, not necessarily will work with Netflix UK, Germany or other countries.

To make sure you’re able to access the US Netflix as well as Netflix libraries from other countries, we regularly check the VPNs that still work.

Netflix is committed to blocking access from any VPN and what works today may not work tomorrow. Therefore, make sure you visit this page to stay updated on the VPNs that currently work to bypass the block.

Before you continue, please keep in mind that this guide is NOT TO HELP YOU ACCESS NETFLIX WITHOUT A SUBSCRIPTION. This is an illegal practice. This guide is meant to help you access different libraries using your subscription.

As you might already know, Netflix offers different libraries in different countries. Depending on your country, you might be getting less than 5% of movies and shows than what they get in the US!

That’s true – you might be paying the same and still be getting less. Far less.

It’s not like they are trying to rip you off. Streaming websites have to adhere to several copyright laws due to which they cannot open their content to all countries. But if you want to access the US Netflix server (which is the one with the most extensive library), you can use a VPN for Netflix.

N.3 NordVPN

Best VPN for Netflix NordVPN

NordVPN employs practically unhackable double encryption technology. They apply military-grade encryption to your data twice. However, keep in mind that double encryption can lower your speeds and make content streaming slow. This is why it’s best to turn off double encryption when accessing Netflix.

They have over 5300 servers in 61 countries, provide lightning-fast speeds, and ensure there are no DNS leaks. Also, they have a strict no-logs policy so your browsing sessions remain truly anonymous.

We spoke to their customer service and they told us that NordVPN offers servers optimized for Netflix that do not require configuration by the client. We tested their services and got to know that you can unblock Netflix USA, Netflix UK, Netflix CA, Netflix NL, Netflix JP, and Netflix GR.

As we mentioned earlier, streaming Netflix using VPNs is a cat and mouse game. The servers that work today might be blocked tomorrow. This is why it’s important to talk to the VPN’s customer support before subscribing to their services. We recommend that you get in touch with their customer support to find out which of their servers work to unblock the service.

NordVPN has apps for all major platforms so you can enjoy superfast connectivity on all your devices. The apps run on system startup and come with several features. They offer a killswitch and DNS leak protection to ensure your details remain safe when you use the VPN and there are no data leaks.

As for apps, ZenMate offers dedicated applications for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and it has three browser extensions for Chrome, Opera, and Firefox. It allows its users to protect up to 5 devices at the same time, which is fewer than some on this list, but not too bad.

Their service is excellent and the encryption protocol used is highly reliable. Safer VPN has 700 servers across 34 countries, which means you can watch the streaming platform from other countries as well.

The connection speeds are not top level as other major provider but it is sufficient to stream content without buffering or annoying interruptions. However, HD videos might give a bit of a problem to load.

Since SaferVPN works on Android and iOS as well, streaming Netflix using mobile devices is not a problem.

SaferVPN can be a bit slow on speeds but is otherwise a good choice. You can count on excellent services that will assist you not only to watch Netflix but even keep you safe and anonymous when you go online.

Why You Need a VPN to Unblock Netflix

Ever since its inception in 1997, Netflix has grown tremendously and has become the king of online streaming for TV and Movies. It uses about 37% of America’s internet bandwidth during peak times. No wonder it has clients all around the world.

However, since the juiciest libraries are in the US, UK, and Canada, most users want to connect to these countries.

When you subscribe to Netflix, your subscription is valid worldwide. However, you can use your subscription only to access the website in the country you are connecting from. For instance, if you travel to a foreign country or you are an expat, you can use your subscription only to access the website in the country you are connecting from.

So if you’re from the US and traveling to the Germany, you won’t be able to access the US Netflix library. You can connect to Netflix Germany freely but the movies’ selection will be limited and some content may not be available in English language.

However, if you use a VPN for Netflix, you don’t need to worry about your location. The VPN will hide your real IP address so that the location you are connecting from will not be visible. At the same time the VPN will assign you a new IP address from the country where the VPN server is.

Using this simple trick you may be appearing like connecting from whatever country in the world and gain access to the Netflix website of that country.

How does Netflix Detect VPN or Proxy?

You must have wondered; how does Netflix know I’m using a VPN?

As you may know, accessing one country’s Netflix from another country requires you to connect to a server that is located in the country whose Netflix you wish to watch. By connecting to a server, you get a new, server-owned IP address that allows you to appear to be located in the same place as the server itself.

However, if more people end up doing this with the same server at the same time, it won’t be long before Netflix’s systems figure out that something is wrong. With multiple people using the same address to connect to Netflix and watch its content, the service quickly figures out that this must be a VPN-owned IP, which is then blocked.

As a result, you will lose your ability to stream Netflix content, which is why VPNs tend to constantly fight the same battle of replacing servers and addresses in order to replace the ones that do not work anymore.

Why Netflix Bans VPNs?

Netflix bans VPN

Now the question arises, why does Netflix bother so much with IP addresses? And why VPN services are blocked?

The reason behind this block is related to copyright issues.

Movie producers want to maximize their profits and so they license their content to the highest bidder. If Netflix finds out that many users from a particular region are interested in a specific show or movie, it bids for the territorial license for the area.

Due to the fragmented global licensing and audience interest, there are different shows and movies available for streaming in various countries. The US content is enormous and thus tempts users in other locations to rely on VPN service to unblock the US Netflix catalog.

The same happens if you want to watch any other library not available in the country you are connecting from. This can happen, for instance, if you are an expat and want to watch movies in your original language or if you are traveling and don’t want to miss your favorite TV series or shows.

Using the VPN connection to bypass censorship breaks the platform’s terms of service as well as its agreements with content providers. To access any library, you still need to have a regular subscription. When movies licensed for a specific region are accessed by users from other areas, content owners don’t get paid for the views.

Repeated complaints from content owners pushed Netflix to announce overseas VPN crackdown. They invested heavily in the fight managing to block proxies as well as many VPN servers.

If you attempt to connect to Netflix using a normal VPN server, you might get the error message: “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.”

The Problem With The VPN Ban

The ban on VPNs isn’t good for Netflix either.

International subscribers pay the service and use VPN and proxy services to view the US catalog. With the ban, they may lose interest in Netflix altogether affecting the company’s profits.

Netflix has always been aware of the fact that their overseas customers use VPN and proxy services to unblock the service. The VPN services built the client base while Netflix did nothing to stop them.

With the ban, overseas users quickly notice that they are getting a raw deal from the platform. The only solution would be to open its entire library equally to all countries. But due to pressure from content producers, the dream is nowhere near.

Netflix Ban on VPN to Threaten Your Privacy

This issue leads to even another serious problem. Many people always use a VPN to protect their privacy, and this is what you should do too. However, if your VPN is active, Netflix will block you even if you try to connect to your account from your own country. That implies that if you want to use your subscription, the only option for you is to leave your connection unprotected.

This is unacceptable to many savvy users concerned about their privacy who use a VPN to stay protected from hackers, cybercriminals, or prying eyes.

The ban might also force people to resort to other illegal means of obtaining content such as BitTorrent or Popcorn Time. Many people agree that these policies harm the company as it risks losing customers. It also risks the entertainment industry because as people access illegal content, no money is paid to the people who work hard to produce content.

If you are frustrated by the block on VPNs, don’t lose hope.

We regularly check different VPNs that still can go undetected and bypass the block.

But, keep in mind that the VPNs we mention here today might not work tomorrow. This is why we keep updating our list so you can learn about the VPNs that are currently working for streaming Netflix.

Bypassing the Netflix censorship is not an easy task. For this reason, not every VPN will work for this task.

Why Netflix Content is Different in Every Country?

Netflix has different catalogs for each country, that much we already know. But, have you ever wondered why?

The fact is that Netflix has to purchase licenses in order to be able to offer the content that it offers. Sometimes, it cannot obtain a license to offer a specific movie or show in a specific region, as that region is already covered by another service. Sometimes, there is not enough demand in a region for a certain show or movie, and Netflix simply doesn’t wish to pay for the license.

The reason is usually a legal one if something is missing, and that is why using a VPN to access other regions is only fair. You are paying the same price as others, however, so you should be able to access all the content on the platform.

Is It Legal to Use a VPN to Watch Netflix?

Using VPN to watch Netflix is not illegal, although it is a well-known fact that Netflix doesn’t really like it.

The service will not punish you, the user, for using a VPN. Instead, its goal is to try and block VPN-owned IP addresses.

Sadly, Netflix ended up being quite capable in this regard, which is why most VPNs do not work with it anymore. But, there are still a few that will let you unblock it and watch whatever you wish, so do try them out.

How to Watch Netflix with a VPN

Netflix Homepage

With the ability to change Netflix region, you can access Netflix’s catalog for pretty much any country, as long as your VPN of choice has a server in it, and it can unblock Netflix in the first place.

Watching Netflix with a VPN is very simple, and yet very rewarding. Once you obtain a VPN, you need to log into it and find a server network. Once you do, simply connect to a server in any country whose content you wish to watch.

The richest Netflix library can be found in the US, but the US doesn’t always have access to everything that you may want to watch.

In a lot of cases, specific shows and movies are only available in countries like the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, and others. No matter where they are available, with a VPN you can bypass geo-restrictions and access most, if not all, that Netflix has to offer.

The simplest way to do all that we have mentioned above is to follow these steps:

Step 1

Choose one of the VPNs that can unblock Netflix. For this mini-tutorial we will take ExpressVPN as example since it is the most trusted VPN to unblock Netflix.

You can subscribe for just one month or click on this link to access the special promotion 12+3 months at $6.67/month.

Step 2

Go to its website and sign up. You will have to enter details such as your email and payment information

Step 3

Download a VPN app for the device/system you wish to watch Netflix on

Step 4

Install the app, launch it, and log in

Step 5

At this point, you should find a list of offered servers, which may be presented differently, depending on the VPN provider

Step 6

Find a server located in a country whose Netflix library you wish to access, and connect to it

Step 7

And, that’s it. After your VPN is activated, go to Netflix and you will have access to the full movie library available in the country the VPN server is located.

One thing to note is to avoid using proxies. Proxies will not really change the Netflix region for you. Rather, they would try to access content on your behalf and deliver it to you. However, this process is quite flawed, and it doesn’t have any encryption or protection of your identity. As a result, we do not recommend it.

VPN Features you Need for Netflix

If you’re considering using a VPN to unblock the US library, here are some features worth considering. Note that all the VPNs in our list comply with these important requirements.

Speed And Uptime

You need the fastest VPN servers to be able to stream high-quality video content. The added encryption by VPN services lowers the internet speed. It is advisable to test speeds on various US servers during the trial period. Make good use of the money-back guarantee as it will let you get a full refund if you’re not happy with the services.

To avoid the frustrations caused by buffering, you should consider a VPN service that guarantees 99% uptime.

VPN Server Locations

If you want to unblock the US library, you should go for a VPN with plenty of servers in the US. If a VPN doesn’t have a server in the US, it will not work with US Netflix. The good thing is that most VPNs have servers in the US.

However, all US servers cannot unblock the service. There are only some specific servers that can bypass the the VPN blocks. Make sure you read a review before purchasing a VPN subscription.

And if you’re looking for a VPN because you want to unblock content that’s available only in a certain country such as Italy, Germany, France or Spain, make sure your VPN has servers in that specific country.

You also need a VPN that offers high speeds so you can stream videos without any lags. Whether you want to watch movies or TV, you’ll need a VPN that offers a fast network.

Unlimited Bandwidth

Most top VPNs provide unlimited bandwidth. If your VPN provides limited bandwidth, it’s going to limit the number of movies or shows you can watch. Some top VPN companies (such as Tunnelbear) limit the bandwidth for free accounts. If you want unlimited bandwidth, make sure you switch to a Premium account.

Imagine how frustrating it would be to be denied access to the US Netflix server just because you consumed all your bandwidth!

Security Protocols

It is important that the VPN uses a secure protocol that will ensure you get the best speeds for the highest quality videos. We recommend choosing a VPN that supports OpenVPN which is the most secure and best-performing protocol.

Many IP addresses

Having many IP addresses in the US (or the region you’re trying to unlock) is important. In the case of blocking, the service provider can give you another one that works to unblock Netflix.

How to Unblock Netflix on Chromecast, Roku, Smart TV, Apple TV, PS4, Xbox, Kodi.

One thing to keep in mind is that you may find yourself in a situation where you need to use a device that is not supported by your VPN of choice. Or, alternatively, it is possible that the device doesn’t have support for your VPN.

The way to bypass this is to use your VPN in combination with a router, and then use that encrypted connection to the internet to connect the original device.

This process could be different, depending on the firmware of the router you own. In some cases, you might even have to get a completely new firmware onto the VPN-supporting router.

There is that third option, as well, which is to buy pre-configured routers that you can simply start using right out of the box, without having to do any tweaking on your own. This is the best option for those who are not tech-savvy and comfortable with making changes on their own.

Can I Use a Free VPN for Netflix

Free VPNs do exist, and they are likely to let you browse through the majority of online content that you could not access before. However, they are unlikely to work for a few reasons.

One of them is the fact that free VPNs are usually too slow in order to be used for streaming. You could still try, of course, but the chances are that you would constantly experience buffering and other problems that would spoil the experience.

That is if you could access foreign Netflix with them, at all. You see, the service uses a rather powerful anti-VPN tech that stores and compares IP addresses, and then it blocks those that are suspected or confirmed to be owned by VPNs. It does this in order to prevent people from accessing content that they are not supposed to have access to.

Most of such content is restricted due to legal reasons, as Netflix has specific licenses for streaming specific content in specific areas. These technologies have even gotten the best of many premium services that invest money to bypass the block.

Free VPNs, of course, do not invest money at all. Therefore, they are not equipped to bypass such blocks.

Is Netflix Winning The Battle With VPN?

Although the company has been successful in blocking many VPN and proxy services, including the famous IPVanish, the game is still on.

The above-listed VPN service providers are not ready to throw in the towel. Whenever they get blocked, they act swiftly to restore service.

When one of their servers gets blacklisted, they come up with newer servers. They always manage to bypass the VPN ban by employing various tactics including obfuscation, new IP addresses, and dedicated IP addresses that cannot be easily spotted by the system.

Troubleshooting Netflix VPN

troubleshooting Netflix

We often receive emails from our readers experiencing problems streaming Netflix US even with the VPNs on our list. As discussed earlier, the VPNs mentioned by us might get blocked. But mostly, the problem is just temporary.

As soon as a server gets blocked, the VPN company gets up and fixes the problem so its users can enjoy unrestricted streaming content. In a few days, the VPN provider gets to go around the block again and you will get access again.

However, most of the time, the problem might be because of the settings on the device you are using.

How to watch international Netflix and how to bypass the Netflix block

If Netflix doesn’t work with the above-listed VPN services, we recommend that you:

  • try switching servers
  • switch to a different browser (Firefox is the most recommended)
  • make sure there are no IP leaks (you may use our Free IP locator tool)
  • check you do not have a DNS leak (you can use our free DNS leak tool)
  • try clearing cache

If that does not work for you, try disabling IPV6 in your internet settings.

If you bump into the Netflix Proxy Error M7111-1331-5067, you may read our tutorial on how to fix the Proxy Error M7111-1331-5067.

DNS Leaks And Why Must You Care?

DNS (Domain Name Service) is responsible for translating a website address/URL into an IP address to which your computer can communicate. Without a DNS, your web browser can’t display the website.

A DNS leak occurs when the VPN is on and yet the requests to transform a website’s address/URL into an IP address goes through another DNS server instead of the VPN’s. When that happens, the owner of that DNS server can pry on your online activities or even log them.

DNS leaks can unmask your real IP resulting in Netflix blocks

A good Netflix VPN should run its own dedicated DNS servers to perform the DNS translation tasks itself. It is also prudent to have software with built-in measures to guard against dangerous DNS leaks.

VPN NOT Working with Netflix

Unfortunately, there are also many VPN services that do not unblock Netflix, as the streaming service managed to identify and block their IP addresses. Many such VPNs even confirmed their inability to bypass the block.

In other words, these are services that you wish to avoid if your goal is to unblock the service in other countries. Here are some VPNs that are confirmed NOT to work anymoreç

Unblock-Us

Unblock-Us definitely does not work anymore, and it doesn’t even work on all devices for about three and a half years, now.

Unlocator

Unlocator also stopped working since mid-2016. The company confirmed that they were blocked entirely, and while they did try to create a solution for the issue, there is no information that the situation has changed as of yet.

Buffered

Buffered VPN was able to unblock the service, and it provided apps for Windows and Mac for a while. However, it was also blocked in September 2017, and it never came up with a solution, despite the fact that it stated that it is working on one.

Unotelly

Unotelly went through pretty much the same ordeal as the others. It used to be able to bypass the geo’localization until the company found a way to block it completely. It also wanted to try and create a solution for the issue, and it also failed in doing so. It has been unable to unblock Netflix since early 2016.

Hola

Hola is a commonly encountered VPN, but it cannot unblock the USA Netflix server. In fact, many experts would recommend not using it at all under any circumstances, as it has a history of abusing its own members for illegal purposes, such as the distribution of pirated materials, DDoS attacks, pornography, and more.

Tunnelbear

Tunnelbear is a fun VPN if you appreciate bear puns, but it is not a good choice for unblocking Netflix. It doesn’t even mention it on its website, but if you dig deep, you will find that it points towards a troubleshooting article regarding bypassing restrictions. Still, being blocked by this streaming service is not something that can be resolved with troubleshooting, so we suggest skipping this service as well.

GetFlix

GetFlix is not really a VPN, but rather a smart DNS proxy service that made a name for itself with claims that it can unblock Netflix server cheaply and quickly. Unfortunately, Netflix quickly caught on and blocked it just like every other service on this list, so now, they have a rather misleading name, but no actual way to deliver on the promise.

HideIP VPN

HideIPVPN was another service that was capable of bypassing the block prior to 2016. However, this is no longer the case for about four years now, so you won’t have luck if you pick this provider, either.

Blockless

Contrary to the name, Netflix was quite successful at blocking Blockless, and it can no longer deliver. Yet another win for Netflix, and another loss for the VPN industry and its users.

Overplay

Finally, we have Overplay, which was also blocked in early 2016. The streaming service attempted to come up with a solution for a while, but it seemingly gave up on such efforts after a while, and its website no longer promises access to the streaming platform.

Conclusion

While users in the US enjoy the largest Netflix library, users in other parts of the world have fewer options. It means that users in the less favored regions or customers living abroad will continue looking for ways to bypass the restriction.

VPN services are under pressure from customers to provide solutions for streaming Netflix. On the other hand, the company is under pressure from content providers (especially Hollywood) to block users using VPN and proxy services.

It only means that the cat and mouse game between Netflix and VPN services is not about to end.

In our article, we have listed for you the best VPN to watch Netflix. And we have also explained how does their system detects VPN use.

While they are currently able to unblock the US category, we can’t assure you that they will continue working in the future.

Sometimes a VPN can be down for a few days and then restore the service. We advise subscribers to take advantage of free trials and the money- back guarantee to test the ability of the VPN service to unblock Netflix before committing to a long-term subscription.

Quote – “A dedicated IP address is an intellectual property address that is used by only one user. ”

Probably a good idea to google what IP address actually stands for and fix this.

      Hello Mattrrr91,

Where you live is important if you live in countries with a strong censorship like China, Turkey, UAE and so on. In this case you need to make sure the VPN you buy works in the country where you live.
In any other case, most important is to check if the VPN has servers in the countries where you want to access websites. For instance, if you buy a VPN because you love to watch BBC iPlayer, you need to make sure the VPN has servers in the UK.
